It’s a popular form of Search Engine Optimization, to exchange links with other websites of a similar nature. This way you can achieve higher page ranks. Now, ideally you would exchange links with websites that are complimentary to your own, but what about websites that are direct competitors?

This usually happens automatically with Google Adsense, you can block competitor ads, but at least you get money for that click.

Would you risk losing business to competitor websites if it meant you earned some good page rank?
